April 26, 2012 – Approximately 80 dentists across the Lower Mainland waived their usual oral cancer screening fee on April 26 to offer adults a free oral cancer screening using the VELscope VX. The non-invasive early-screening oral cancer device can be used by dentists to find abnormalities in the mouth that are not visible to the naked eye. Oral Health Month: New scope screens for cancer
Posted on
Apr 24, 2012
April 24, 2012, LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania — April is oral cancer awareness month, a time to note the 40,000 cases of oral cancer diagnosed each year in the United States. This type of cancer is nearly impossible to detect with the naked eye and even some early detection tools, said David R. Robinson, DMD, who is now offering routine screenings with the VELscope Vx. The new tool uses blue light to stimulate natural fluorescence in the soft tissues of the mouth. This allows dental professionals VELscope to see abnormalities or disease. Mouth tissue fluoresces under certain wavelengths of light that the Vx emits.
